Denton on Craft Mafias' hit list
Hardcore Denton craft fans now have two familias to share their wares with, one on campus and the other in Denton. But no one needs a gun to deal with these mafias --- unless, of course, they dispense hot glue.

Inspired by the Austin Craft Mafia, a grassroots professional alliance of Austin businesswomen, Mandy Metts, Colleyville senior, decided to found the Denton Craft Mafia. The group, based on the mafia's community principle, has not had an official meeting yet. But Metts is ready to welcome members.
"I've been talking about this since last summer," she said. In between then and now, Metts has spent a "ridiculous amount of time" creating the web site and brainstorming future events. "Next week, you're going to see flyers everywhere," she said.
On Friday, the Denton Craft Mafia officers were sitting in Metts's apartment, adorned with textiles, sculptures, and photos created by Metts, brainstorming ideas for the first group project: a fashion show fundrasier.
According to Metts, the money raised would go back to the group for purchasing craft supplies. Denton Craft Mafia is now directly affiliated with the Austin Craft Mafia, but they do not follow the same exclusivity. While Austin's organization is entirely made up of female entrepeneurs who craft for a living, Denton's chapter is open to men and non-business owners.
"I want it to be more of a Denton thing because I love this city," Metts said. Other Denton Craft Mafia members such as Lauren Dycus, North Richland Hills sophomore, Darcy DuBose, Hurst freshman, and Kaylea Selinski, Bedford freshman, said they joined because they wanted to support each other and trade services. "We used to make earrings and barrettes," Dycus said.
In the future, Metts, who sells jewelry she makes from beads and stained glass, hopes to sponsor craft fairs. "I want this to stay," Metts said. "Everybody that starts something good ends up leaving." Metts hopes other Craft Mafia chapters pop up around the country so they can all network. "It could be a really powerful outlet," she said.
Denton Craft Mafia's first meeting is Feb. 5 and the $5 membership fee will be waived for people who come to the first meeting.
